What are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are a group of organic compounds, It is one of the three major food groups in addition to Proteins and Fats, more about Protein rich foods. It is made of the Elements Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H) & Oxygen (O). It provides the main Energy factor for the Human Body. Carbohydrates are the most common organic compound on earth and Glucose,  (in short, Glc) is the most common and most important organic Carbohydrate.

 

If so, what are “Good  Carbohydrates” & what are the “Bad Carbohydrates”

Well, the “Bad Carbs” are the one that is made of the simple compounds that  provides immediate Energy.

But the energy supplied is temporary and short due to a sharp rise in blood sugar levels, Will drop sharply immediately after, so hunger will appear faster,  and the desire for something sweet is not long in coming.

In that group of carbs we will find for example :Glucose

  • White & Brown Sugar
  • White Flour
  • Honey
  • White Rice

 

 

 

The “Good Carbs” are Starches, complex carbohydrates, which contain whole grains, minerals and vitamins and have a high fiber content. It is made of a Chain of simple carbs. Starches body decomposition process is more complicated and longer, so good Carbs takes longer to process and does not cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels and causes satiety for longer time.

 

In that group of carbs we will find

  • Rye breadWhole wheat bread
  • Whole wheat bread
  • whole grain rice
  • Corn
  • Quinoa
  • Sweet potato
  • Basmati rice
  • Bean etc.

 

Also fruits like:

  • BananaFruit basket
  • Apple
  • Melon
  • Berries
  • Strawberries
  • Peach etc.

 

 

Consumption of complex carbohydrates helps accelerate the metabolism and therefore also helps in weight loss,  combined with a balanced diet.
